Course Description
Pollinators in Peril
Instructors(s): Erika Schielke, Biology
Headlines warn of a coming ‘insect apocalypse’ – what are the causes, why does it matter, and how can we help? Students will get their hands dirty (literally!) as we explore these questions while designing and planting a pollinator garden on the 91°µÍø campus. Readings, local field trips, and guest lectures will introduce the causes and consequences of pollinator declines, the rich variety of our native plants and insects, examples of pollinator protection efforts, and different cultural perspectives about our relationship with the natural world. Students will apply research about native plants and pollinators to the design of our garden, and will navigate the real-world logistics of planning a project in collaboration with campus stakeholders. By designing educational outreach materials, students will learn to translate scientific information for a general audience. This course is taught in a team-based learning format, which centers collaborative in-class work to apply course concepts.
